Offering assistance to children and families

STEPS image of kite flying and tree on a hillFamilies of children with advanced illness, including acute and chronic medical conditions, face complex decisions and many demands on their energy and resources. The Supportive Therapies and Enhanced Palliative Services (STEPS) program at UC Davis Children's Hospital brings together an array of services to support children and adolescents with advanced illness and their families:

  • The interdisciplinary team includes a network of expert physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, child life specialists and chaplains who support and enhance your child's care through consultation with his or her primary health-care team
  • Our goal is to assist the primary health-care team, you and your child to prevent, reduce and soothe symptoms.
  • By focusing on your child's physical and emotional wellbeing, the STEPS team members allow the primary team to concentrate on treating the underlying medical cause of your child's condition.

What do STEPS members do?

Through consultation with patients, families and primary team members we aim to:

  • Optimize pain and symptom management
  • Facilitate communication between family and the primary care team
  • Support patients and families to alleviate stress
  • Coordinate inpatient, outpatient and home care

What does STEPS offer?

"STEPS team members enhance care in body and spirit, coordinating resources to provide support, hope, healing and wellness.”
– Theresa Murdock-Vlautin, M.D., Associate Professor of Pediatric Critical-Care Medicine

Comprehensive patient and family services
From diagnosis through the course of the illness, the program’s goal is to ensure your child is as comfortable as possible through the full spectrum of care. The medical, mental health and spiritual services embodied in the program emphasize compassionate, family-centered care that enhances quality of life. In close collaboration with you, your child and his or her primary team, we work together to develop a comprehensive quality of life care plan and help guide difficult conversations, as well as helping you focus on making childhood experiences meaningful.

Resources and education
Members of our interdisciplinary team are available to help you learn more about communication and decision-making, pain and symptom management, family dynamics, sibling issues and school interactions.
