Since 1998, UC Davis Medical Center has had a growing and dynamic hospitalist program whose main goals have been twofold: to ensure the highest quality of care to our hospitalized patients and to serve as primary educators/mentors to medical students and internal medicine residents in the care of the hospitalized adult patient.
Hospitalists are physicians whose primary focus is general medical care of the hospitalized patient. We are freed of many of the constraints that an active outpatient doctor faces, therefore able to dedicate our time and energy to provide comprehensive and efficient inpatient medical care. We provide 24 hour in-hospital care and can respond to out patients and their families promptly. We are familiar with key hospital personnel and can anticipate and facilitate care from admission through discharge; including interfacing with the ER, subspecialty and surgical consultants, discharge planners, social workers, clergy and our ancillary services. We are able to facilitate and improve post-acute care needs for the patient through direct communication with primary care providers as well as coordinating the appropriate post-discharge care services such as home health, specialized rehabilitation, and home IV infusion services.
