Letter from the Department Chair
"The brain is the most remarkable and enigmatic organ of our body, shaping who we are, what we do and how we do it."
Fascination with brain function and its afflictions has drawn our internationally renowned faculty to the Department of Neurology, UC Davis, to care for individuals who have neurological problems and to devise and evaluate new therapies for neurological diseases.
We appreciate that you have come to our website to learn more about our clinical, educational, and research programs.
Because of remarkable advances in neuroscience research over the past 20 years, neurology is being transformed from an observational, primarily descriptive branch of medicine into a therapeutically dynamic discipline. Our Department of Neurology has 14 clinical areas specializing in childhood and adult disorders of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and of the peripheral nervous system (nerves, muscle, and autonomic disorders). The research programs of our department are remarkably diverse, ranging from neuroscientific studies of the individual brain cell types (neurons and glia) to clinical and basic investigation exploring how we think (cognition).
Who we are: The Department of Neurology is a dedicated team of academic neurologists, neuropsychologists, and basic and clinical research scientists who pursue a threefold mission of clinical care, research, and education. Highly skilled physicians with subspecialty expertise in each of the domains of adult neurology provide care to patients with diseases of the nervous system in both hospital and outpatient settings.
The department has nationally recognized clinical care and research programs in:
Research Centers & Affiliations: Departmental faculty members are associated with the UC Davis Center for Neuroscience, the Institute for Pediatric Regenerative Medicine at the Shriners Hospital for Children, the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain, the UC Davis MIND Institute, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, UC Davis Primate Research Center, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System hospitals at Mather and Martinez.
