Resident Retreats

The Neurology Residency Program hosts a half-day retreat in the fall and spring. Residents are excused from all clinical duties during this time. The retreat provides an opportunity for residents to come together in one location and get to know one another in a relaxing, social, and fun activity. The retreat is an opportunity for the residents to relax and get to know each other better. The main objectives for the retreats are fostering support and camaraderie among peers; enhancing communication and stress managements skills; and developing an appreciation of and respect for diversity among colleagues.

Welcome Dinner for Neurology Residents

At the beginning of each academic year, a welcome dinner is hosted in the program director’s home for the Neurology residents. This intimate setting offers an opportunity for the residents to become better acquainted with each other as well as with the department’s faculty on a more personal level.

Lunch with the Chair

On a quarterly basis, the Neurology Department Chair, Dr. Gorin, will have lunch with the residents. In this setting, Dr. Gorin encourages residents to offer suggestions for changes, as well as bring up new and innovative ideas to add to the program. Dr. Gorin’s goal is to foster the residents’ sense of co-ownership of the program and elicit their feedback in a constructive, solution-oriented approach.

PGY Level Class Meetings

The Program Director, Dr. Duffy, will meet with each class separately, twice a year, to check in on each of the residents to address any challenges they may be facing as a class or as individuals. Dr. Duffy will provide support and tools for managing the challenges of physician training with special attention to resident wellness.

Mentorship Program

Goal: We aim to offer a comprehensive mentoring program to provide guidance to residents throughout their residency program. All residents will be assigned to a faculty mentor that they will be scheduled to meet with on a quarterly basis. Faculty mentors will supervise and advise resident mentees regarding scholarly activities, research, and career plans. Faculty mentors will also be available to discuss any issues or concerns that might arise throughout a residents’ residency program in order to provide any necessary support.

Objectives: Meet on a quarterly basis to check-in, review rotation schedule, educational plan, CV, QI projects, Research projects, teaching, career goals/plans, and fellowship.

  • Responsibilities of Mentor:
    • Help resident set priorities to achieve goals
    • Provide assessment and formative feedback
    • Encourage creative and broader thinking
    • Provide emotional support
    • Act as an advocate
  • Responsibilities of Mentee:
    • Provide updated portfolio to mentor at the scheduled meetings
    • Share personal goals and priorities
    • Provide any updates that have occurred since past meeting
    • Share with mentor any problems or frustrations that may be occurring either personally or professionally
    • Actively engage in creating quarterly action plan of achievable goals
