U.S. News & World Report, which annually recognizes hospitals that excel in treating patients with serious and challenging injuries and illnesses, has again ranked UC Davis Medical Center as one of the nation's best hospitals.
UC Davis ranked among the top 50 hospitals in 11 adult medical specialties:
- Cardiology and heart surgery
- Diabetes and endocrinology
- Ear, nose and throat
- Neurology and neurosurgery
UC Davis was designated as “high performing” in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery in the medical specialties rankings.
In regional rankings, UC Davis Medical Center was recognized as No. 1 in the Sacramento metropolitan area and fifth in California.
“The annual rankings help reflect a commitment to the outstanding patient care that our clinical teams provide day-in and day-out in our hospital and clinics,” said Ann Madden Rice, chief executive officer of UC Davis Medical Center. “We always view ranking as a top hospital as additional motivation to work even harder in our pursuit of excellence in quality and patient care in every way possible.”
U.S. News also released ratings for common types of care, with UC Davis Medical Center rated as high performing in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure and lung cancer surgery. The hospital met expected standards of care for hip replacement and knee replacement.
“For nearly three decades, we’ve strived to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News in a press release. "By providing the most comprehensive data available, we hope to give patients the information they need to find the best care across a range of specialties.”
In June, U.S. News ranked UC Davis Children’s Hospital among the nation’s top 50 for pediatric care in five specialties: diabetes and endocrinology, neonatology, nephrology and, in collaboration with Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California, orthopaedics and urology.
The U.S. News Best Hospitals adult medical care rankings help guide patients to hospitals that deliver outstanding care across 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. The Best Hospitals methodologies include objective measures such as patient survival, the number of times a given procedure is performed, infection rates, adequacy of nurse staffing and more.
Best Hospitals was produced by U.S. News with RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
The rankings will be published in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals 2018” guidebook, available to pre-order from the U.S. News Store for delivery in late August. For more information, visit Best Hospitals.
